Frequently Asked Questions - Answered

  1. Are all DJs the same?

The simple answer to this is no.  In my experience as both a guest and a DJ, I can tell you that I have seen some awful discos.  There are some reputable and some not so reputable DJs around.  You need to ensure that they have quality equipment, have the necessary insurances and have a good reputation.  Word of mouth is the best way of finding a DJ to suit your needs.  Failing this ask some delving questions such as do they have public liability insurance, is their equipment PAT tested and what recent events have they performed at.

  2. The fee I pay is all profit - isn't it?

If only that was true.  All DJs have a number of overheads to pay. These include:  Public liability insurance, equipment, music, advertising, phone calls, repairs, vehicle maintenance and fuel.  The fee paid covers not only the DJs time but all of the above.

  3. DJing is an easy job - isn't it?

There are a number of misconceptions about DJs.  Many believe that DJs only work 4 or 5 hours and have lots of fun.  The facts are that the time spent playing the music is a small fraction of the time a DJ invests in that event.  Consultations, equipment upkeep, music library maintenance and other jobs all happen behind the scenes.  Yes most DJs enjoy their job however they cannot relax and enjoy the event in the same way as a guest would.  They will appear to be having fun because that is their professional presentation.

  4. Do DJs require training?

If a DJ makes it look easy, it is because he has learned his trade only one way... experience.  Mixing and smooth presentation takes many years behind the console.  The DJ also has to have extensive knowledge of music past and present which comes from a passion for his job.

  5. Is the cheapest quote the best quote?

Not necessarily.  People rank their wedding day as the most important day of their lives yet they will give this responsibility to the lower bidder.  Would you do the same for your wedding dress or flowers - probably not.  The DJ will be in control for 4 to 6 hours of your event, whether it be a wedding, birthday or other event.  Music will be a key component of this event so do you want to put the success of it in the hands of someone who thinks themselves as only worth a low fee.
